Princess Margaret urged Queen to ‘give Diana a chance’ before ‘guillotine came down’

The Queen’s sister is said to have been a mediator between Diana and those who doubted her when she first joined the Royal Family. However, Margaret changed her mind once she felt Her Majesty had been disappointed by Diana, according to a royal author.

Andrew Morton told People how the similarities between the two Princesses drew them together.

He said: “Neither of them were hunting, shooting or fishing types.

“Margaret put her arm around Diana. She could see they were two metropolitan princesses.”

The ‘Diana: Her True Story’ author elaborates on how Margaret welcomed Diana into the Firm in his new book ‘Elizabeth & Margaret: The Intimate World of the Windsor Sisters’.

He wrote: “Princess Margaret came to her rescue, suggesting to the Queen that Diana was having difficulties adjusting to her role and that she should cut her some slack.

“The Queen, who avoids family confrontation if at all possible, took her sister’s advice.”

The royal author told People: “She did say, ‘Just give Diana a chance.'”

But Diana’s bombshell Panorama interview – which saw her unveil details of her crumbling marriage to Prince Charles – marked a before and after in how she was perceived by other royals.

According to Mr Morton, it was at that time that “the guillotine really came down.”
