Late drama sends England U21s out of Euro Championship

Eberechi Eze scores a penalty
Eberechi Eze scored a penalty on his first start for England in this tournament

England suffered injury-time heartbreak as a late Croatia goal saw them fail to make it out of their Euro Under-21 Championship group.

A penalty from Eberechi Eze and a stunning strike from Curtis Jones were not enough to secure their progression, as they needed to win by two clear goals.

Domagoj Bradaric’s late goal secured Croatia’s quarter-final progression.

The knockout round is scheduled to take place between 31 May-6 June.

Defeats against Portugal and Switzerland meant England, who have now failed to advance past the group stage in five out of the last six competitions, needed to defeat Croatia by at least two goals.
