Dermot O’Leary says lockdown has given him more time with baby son Kasper

Dermot O’Leary has said that he is ‘grateful’ for the coronavirus lockdown as it has allowed him to spend more time with his baby son Kasper, nine months.

Talking in a new interview, the This Morning presenter, 42, also gushed over his ‘best friend’ wife Dee Koppang, 42, after they welcomed Kasper in June.

Dermot admitted that it has been ‘lovely’ having ‘enforced paternity leave’ due to the lockdown and that having Kasper has been a ‘real blessing’.

Speaking to New! magazine, he said: ‘I was always going to take some time off but there’s no question about the fact that I’m able to be around him, more than I would have otherwise. So I feel very grateful for that as well. Definitely.’

Elsewhere during the chat, Dermot was also asked about the ‘secret’ to his marriage with wife Dee.

The couple had first met in 2002 when they worked for the same TV production company and got engaged in New York in December 2011, tying the knot in 2012.

Dermot said of their marriage: ‘There is no secret. I really like her, she’s my best friend. I think not being in each other’s pockets all the time and giving each other space is a massive thing. We’ve never been too beholden to each other.

‘Obviously, we’ve got a bubba and so someone’s got to change the nappies! We both do our fair share of that, but as well as that, it’s like, if someone wants to go out, they go out.’

Dermot said there’s no ‘nonsense’ of negotiating who goes out when and noted that you wouldn’t treat your best friend like that so the same applies with your spouse.

The presenter, who recently released his children’s book Toto the Ninja Cat and the Mystery Jewel Thief, also joked that he would be ‘devastated’ if his son didn’t like his children’s book series.

Elsewhere during the chat, Dermot, who is a presenter on the ITV series, admitted that he can’t see The X Factor returning until at least 2022 or 2023.

He also hilariously revealed that he can’t keep in touch with show boss Simon Cowell as he doesn’t have a phone, but that he does chat to his three PAs who are ‘doing fine’.

Back in September, Dermot discussed the difficulties he and wife Dee had in becoming parents, advising other couples not to ‘lose hope’.

Speaking to Fabulous, Dermot gave words of encouragement to couples struggling to conceive after Dee previously admitted they had a ‘rocky road’ to becoming parents.

He said: ‘Don’t lose hope. Just keep going and you’ll find resolution one way or another, whether it’s through adoption or IVF or whatever.

‘Because if you really want to be a parent and you want to bring a kid up in a loving, nurturing and supportive household, then you should do your utmost to do so.

‘And I know it’s very easy to say these things, because none of that is science. But there are always ways.’

The X Factor host also discussed life during lockdown and said it allowed the pair to have a lot of time with their newborn, while he otherwise would have been in America filming the judges’ houses portion of the ITV show.

Dermot added that while the ongoing pandemic has been an ‘unsettling’ time, getting to spend his days with Kasper was the silver lining.

He also revealed that one day, when Dee is ready, she will share their journey to becoming parents in the hopes it will give hope to other couples.

Dermot and Dee found out the sex of their baby early on, but kept it a secret from friends and family.

He had previously confirmed the birth of Kasper last June with a sweet snap shared to Instagram of a babygrow and toy rabbit that had been brought for the tot.

Dermot wrote: ‘Welcome to the world baby Koppang O’Leary… We’re delighted to announce that we’ve had a baby!

‘A little boy born on Tuesday 23rd June 2020 (Sankthansaften / Midsummer for you Norwegians) at 8.19am, weighing in at 6lb 13oz.

‘Enjoying the cuddles in the newborn bubble… cats yet to be 100% convinced. Lots of love, Dermot & Dee x.’

Dermot and Dee tied the knot in 2012 after ten years together at St Mary’s Church in Chiddingstone, Kent.
